Aldi has announced a significant pay raise for its store assistants in the UK. From 1 September 2025, Aldi will pay a minimum wage of € 13.00 per hour nationwide. For workers in the M25 London area, the minimum hourly rate will be higher, at 14.33 euros. This move marks Aldi as the first UK supermarket to set such a high minimum pay bar for store assistants.
Aldi’s increase comes as part of its ongoing commitment to “never be beaten on pay.” The new pay rates also exceed the Real Living Wage rate of 12.60 euros set by the Living Wage Foundation. It conforms to Aldi’s position as the highest-paying supermarket for its colleagues in the UK.
Aldi is also unique among major grocers in offering paid breaks to all store colleagues. These paid benefits are estimated to add around 1,385 euros annually to the average worker’s income, showing Aldi’s commitment to staff welfare beyond hourly pay.
Giles Hurley, Aldi UK and Ireland CEO, said, “Our people are the driving force behind our success across the UK. This latest investment in pay is a reflection of their hard work and the incredible contribution they make every single day.” He emphasized pride in remaining the UK’s highest-paying supermarket, trying to attract and keep staff amid a tight labor market.
Other major UK supermarkets, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Lidl, have also raised their minimum wages recently. However, Aldi’s 13.00 euro minimum rate sets a new standard as the highest wage guarantee nationwide for store assistants.
The new Aldi pay rise starts in September 2025 and affects thousands of store workers across the UK. It shows the company’s commitment to investing in its workforce in a time when retail jobs are under pressure. Aldi’s pay raise may also push other supermarkets to raise their minimum wages further to stay competitive and retain staff.
Aldi’s pay raise to 13.00 euros an hour nationwide and 14.33 euros in London reflects a strong commitment to paying workers more than the living wage. This move emphasizes Aldi’s leading position in the UK grocery sector when it comes to employee pay and benefits.
