After teasing a new product launch on X earlier today, Apple has just revealed of its line of 14-inch MacBook Pro, now powered by the shiny new M5 chip-. The press release, accompanied by a seperate M5 announcement, was just published on the company’s website, unpacking the new laptop in great detail. It is more or less an upgraded version, with the new chip fitting well into the place of last year’s M4 in an otherwise pretty much similar package.
No design refinements or thrilling elements to boast of. The chassis, as well as the 14-inch Mini LED display, is the same as it’s predecessors, just like all the other essential features, including ports, speakers, keyboard, trackpad, and even 12 MP webcam.
The battery is again stated to be 24 hours in video playback, and still, you only receive Wi-Fi 6E. The SSD is however 2X quicker than the last gen and now you can spec it to 4 TB, twice as much as the last gen.
It is apparent that Apple is wholly concentrated on what is inside, the most recent generation of their home-grown M- series silicon M5. It is this swap that probably makes the memory bandwidth now be able to upgrade to over 150GB/s on the M5, as compared to 120 GB/s on the M4.
The SoC package has a 10 core processor, a 10 core graphics card that has a Neural Accelerator in each core and a 16 core NPU to run AI on the device.
The M5 chip is based on the N3P node of TSMC and features a higher-performing GPU capable of providing 1.6 times higher FPS in a game, 20 percent higher multi-core CPU performance, and 1.7 times faster breakdowns of Blender- all compared to the M4. Apple even claims that it is 86 times more powerful than Intel based Macs in AI applications.
The MacBook Pro 14-inch has the same price as the previous year, the base model bring sold at $1599, and it comes with a 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of memory.
Pre-order of the device is currently available and the device will be generally available next week on October 22. Together with the MacBook Pro, Apple updated the Vision Pro and the iPad Pro using the new M5 chip.
The tablet receives Apple in-house C1X modem and N2 network chip which introduces Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 6 connectivity, and with higher connectivity speeds across the board, consumes 30 percent less power than the M4 iPad Pro.
